Where to take yo' mama out for afternoon tea, dinner and cocktails

It's Mother's Day on Sun 6 Mar, which means you're probably working out which bar, restaurant or cafe is appropriate to take yo' mama to. The thing is, every mother is different. Some of them want nothing but Darjeeling and a nice scone, others want a shot of tequila (and to hell with food, the lime counts as sustenance). We've rounded-up a list of choices for every situation, to help the day unfold with as few problems as possible.

For afternoon tea

Hotel MissoniThis place has all the traditional trimmings (scones, finger sandwiches and pastries), but the setting is bright, colourful and modern, so you don't have to sit and stare at floral wallpaper as you throw back that third cup of Earl Grey. Prosecco, cocktails and chocolate-covered strawberries are on the menu, too.
1 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh

Blythswood Square – This fancy-pants five-star Georgian terrace is surrounded by a suitably lovely garden, and the afternoon tea service has everything from sandwiches to macarons and brownies. They say it's an ideal place to sit and watch the world go by, or to listen to your mum tell you all about her best pal Liz, and god, doesn't she look smart with that new hair do, and did she tell you about Sandra's husband, and...

For dinner somewhere posh

Forth Floor – Nothing says 'fancy mum' like Harvey Nicks. This Mother's Day, the Forth Floor restaurant has a four-course lunch and dinner menu, with champagne to boot. Afterwards, you can browse the food section for luxury chutney.
Harvey Nichols, 30-34 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh

The Corinthian Club – This opulent brasserie is offering a special Mother's Day set menu, so you can eat meat and fish and things while staring at a ridiculously fancy ceiling.
191 Ingram Street, Glasgow

For dinner somewhere cheap

The DogsThis restaurant has pricing options that make dining for two cheaper (ideal for you and mama), but it doesn't compromise on quality. If you eat here and get the flowers from ASDA, you're laughing.
110 Hanover Street, Edinburgh

Avant Garde – It has a classy-sounding name, but you can get two mains and a bottle of wine for £30. Win win. It also has live music, so once mum's necked that second glass, she can show you what it really means to boogie.
34-44 King Street, Glasgow

For dinner with the kids

Museum Brasserie – As well as being beautiful and historic, this place also has a kids menu. And if they get bored, send them to look at Dolly the Sheep.
Chambers Street, Edinburgh

Amore – Pizza is always a good shout for families, and you can watch it being prepared at this family-friendly venue in Merchant City. Children's portions are also available.
30 Ingram Street, Glasgow

Forget dinner, mama needs a drink

Dragonfly – This much-loved Old Town bar has an extensive cocktail menu and is suitably lovely enough for Mother's Day.
52 West Port, Edinburgh

The Finnieston – This Glasgow institution has everything from gin classics to contemporary cocktails. Bottom's up!
1125 Argyle Street, Glasgow
