While Star Wars: The Force Awakens (out Thu 17 Dec) might be the dominating force at cinemas this winter, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of festive film screenings in Edinburgh and Glasgow to truly get you in the Christmas spirit.

Parents across the country are probably hoping to escape the oh-so-catchy songs of Anna, Elsa and, let’s not forget, Olaf, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen anytime soon. The beloved Disney musical Frozen is on show at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal (Sun 22 Nov). It’s a sing-a-long version, no less, so be prepared to channel your inner Idina Menzel.

You can also witness Will Ferrell’s humorous attempt to connect with his birth father in family-favourite Elf (Cameo, Edinburgh, Wed 9 Dec; Eastwood Park Theatre, Glasgow, Wed 23 Dec) and fans of Macaulay Culkin battling conmen can relax in the knowledge that the first two films of the Home Alone franchise are screening at Edinburgh’s Cameo cinema (Wed 16 Dec). Meanwhile, Kermit and his friends take on a classic tale in The Muppet Christmas Carol (Cameo, Edinburgh, Sat 12 Dec; Filmhouse, Edinburgh, tbc).

For a more grown up adaptation of Charles Dickens’ story, there’s Bill Murray’s modern take on the foul-spirited, ‘bah humbug’ spouting character in Scrooged (Cameo, Edinburgh, Mon 7 Dec). Adults can also enjoy Frank Capra’s iconic holiday movie about George Bailey getting a bit of guidance from his guardian angel Clarence, with screenings in Edinburgh and Glasgow. After all, would it really be Christmas without It’s A Wonderful Life (Glasgow Film Theatre, Fri 11–Thu 24 Dec. Filmhouse, Edinburgh, Fri 12 Dec)?

Dance lovers are catered for with Bolshoi Ballet’s The Nutcracker, which is screening at the Cameo, the GFT and Glasgow’s Grosvenor cinema (Sun 13 Dec). The internationally renowned Russian ballet company tell the well-known story of the toy nutcracker that comes to life on Christmas Eve, accompanied by Tchaikovsky's timeless score.

If wholesome festive flicks aren’t really your thing, then popular comic horror Gremlins is on at the GFT (Fri 11 Dec). The creature feature is the perfect antidote to the warm and fuzzy Yuletide feeling. Ultimate anti-Christmas film Die Hard (GFT, Fri 18 Dec; Cameo, Edinburgh, Thu 24 Dec) is also available for those opposed to too much holiday sentiment. And what's more appealing than watching Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman attempt to kill each other while it’s snowing outside?
