Edinburgh's Christmas: best five St Andrew's Day events

Including Liz Lochhead, Stick Man and Dean Owens and the Whisky Hearts

Time to dig out your best tartan attire and paint a saltire on one cheek: St Andrew's Day celebrations are happening on Sun 29 Nov. This year, there's a jam-packed programme of events being held in St Andrew's Square (fitting) as part of Edinburgh's Christmas. Here, we've picked some highlights to help you celebrate Scotland's national day in style.

Stick Man
If you've got a young'un in the family, odds are you'll have heard of beloved children's book Stick Man, from Gruffalo creators Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. This award-winning show is based on it, and the production went down a treat when it was featured as part of Edinburgh Christmas' 2014 programme. Our reviewer gave it four stars last year, noting that 'there’s a charming simplicity' that goes down well with young audiences.
11am (60 minutes)

Liz Lochhead
No biggy, it's only Scotland's National Poet. Here, she celebrates all things wordy, from poems and monologue to characters, lyrics and theatre pieces.
6.30pm (50 minutes)

Dean Owens and the Whisky Hearts
Singer-songwriter Dean Owens performs alongside five-piece band the Whisky Hearts, with Celtic americana described as 'Leith via Nashville'. So honky tonk, ye ken?
9pm (60 minutes)

Blazin' Fiddles
I tell you, what these guys can't do with a stringed instrument. The multi-award winning band take to the stage with music from their new album.
7.30pm (60 minutes)

The Banana Sessions
The Scottish three-piece play some happy folk pop tunes, so you can bop like a, er, banana?
5.15pm (60 minutes)

St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, Sun 29 Nov.
