She Dies Tomorrow ★★★★☆

Written and directed by American actress Amy Seimetz (the co-creator of TV's The Girlfriend Experience, alongside the feature Sun Don't Shine), She Dies Tomorrow is a trippy nightmare perfectly suited to our times, which sees fear spread like a contagious disease as person after person becomes convinced of the imminence of their demise. Kate Lyn Sheil, Jane Adams and Chris Messina lead an excellent cast in a film that's as horribly funny as it is highly resonant.

Ready or Not ★★★☆☆

This wildly entertaining high concept horror makes its satellite television debut, delivering silliness and scares in spades. Samara Weaving makes for a fine bride-turned-bad-ass playing Grace, newly married to the wealthy Alex (Mark O'Brien) whose family really are the in-laws from hell. When her induction involves partaking in a randomly selected game, she draws a seriously short straw and finds herself being pursued around the vast mansion and grounds by the suddenly murderous clan (which includes Adam Brody and Andie MacDowell). Leave your sense at the door and you're in for a bloody treat.

Magic Mike XXL ★★★★☆

If Magic Mike was a pleasant surprise its sequel doubled down on its most appealing elements. Described by us as a 'winning blend of male bonding and female fantasy', XXL sees the original crew of male strippers (minus Matthew McConaughey and, less tragically, Alex Pettyfer) hit the road for some eye-popping adventures. Led by a lovely Channing Tatum, the men's geniality, gentlemanliness and vulnerability is in stark contrast to the usual Hangover-style blokey antics and director Gregory Jacobs and returning scribe Reid Carolin do their best to ensure there's no shortage of cheek.

Zodiac ★★★★☆

While we await his latest, Mank (a biography of screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz and his battles with Orson Welles, starring Gary Oldman and Tom Burke respectively, due to be released on Netflix later this year), why not check out one of David Fincher's finest achievements? If Fincher reinvented the serial killer thriller with Seven, he refined it with the class act that is Zodiac, a sleek, eerie and epic look at the pursuit of the titular murderer during the sixties and seventies, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr.

Sully ★★★★☆

Fans of Tom Hanks's stoical turn in the self-penned WWII drama Greyhound (which debuted recently on Apple TV+) will surely enjoy Sully, Clint Eastwood's 2016 spin on the story of Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger (Hanks), the unassuming American pilot who became the most reluctant of heroes after landing a damaged passenger plane on the Hudson River. Drinking in the discomforting media attention, haunting nature of the event, and investigation which nearly saw him blamed, it's a chilly take on trauma and our obsession with celebrity.
