Castle Fraser, Craigievar Castle and Crathes Castles have played their part on big screen and small
Among the National Trust for Scotland’s properties in Aberdeenshire are an array of castles, many of which have featured in films and photo shoots.
Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her portrayal of Elizabeth II in The Queen (2006). And although it’s not a current royal castle, Castle Fraser was used as a backdrop for some of the scenes in the movie. Elsewhere, Craigievar Castle was used as a location in HBO TV movie The Last of the Blonde Bombshells (2000), featuring Judi Dench, James Cosmo, Ian Holm and Olympia Dukakis.
Crathes Castle on the River Dee is renowned for its lush gardens. So naturally, it featured in the BBC programme Glorious Gardens from Above. And fans of craft beer shouldn’t miss a visit to Haddo House either: James Watt and Martin Dickie, founders of award-winning craft brewery BrewDog, filmed in the Aberdeenshire property in 2014 for an American TV show, aptly named Brew Dogs.
