EIFF announces first films for Drive-In Movies at Edinburgh Airport

The new drive-in series will include screenings of Clueless, Grease, The Princess Bride, Alien, La La Land and more

Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) has teamed up with Unique Events to present Drive-In Movies at Edinburgh Airport, an ambitious new film series that will launch next month. Tickets for the first weekend, Thu 27 to Sun 30 Aug, are on sale now at edinburghdrivein.co.uk

Up to 250 cars will be permitted at the Edinburgh Airport car park every month, offering film fans a safe and controlled cinematic experience from the comfort of their cars. EIFF has confirmed that the first weekend of showings in August will include the teen comedy Clueless, cult-favourite The Princess Bride, hit musicals Grease and Sunshine on Leith, family-favourite Up, as well as more recent hits like Get Out, La La Land and Mary Poppins Returns.

Organisers of the Drive-In Movies said: 'We are delighted to be able to share with our audiences the first batch of titles to be screened as part of the Drive-in Movies next month. With a broad selection of timeless classics, family favourites and blockbusters, it really offers something for everyone. We continue to work behind-the-scenes on getting more titles confirmed and, in the meantime, book yourself a walk on the wild ride and see you at Edinburgh Airport for some cinema magic.'

With cars parked two metres apart, Drive-In Movies at Edinburgh Airport aims to provide a safe night out for families and friends whilst staying in line with government guidelines for outdoor events. The films will be shown on a state-of-the-art 100 square metre LED screen, one of the largest mobile screens in the world. The film audio will be broadcast straight to car radios so audiences will also be able to control the soundtrack.

Audiences can arrive up to one-hour prior to the start of the film to take part in a car disco with a playlist relating to the screening, along with an interactive on-screen quiz with spot prizes. Food and snacks will be available for purchase from local stalls and there will also be accessible toilets on-site.

Drive-In Movies will run every month from Aug 2020 until Jan 2021. Standard tickets are priced at £35 per vehicle for up to five people, with a number of tickets being made available to EIFF's community partners. Tickets for the 13 films showing on the 27–30 Aug weekend can be booked now at edinburghdrivein.co.uk. Additional film titles for future months, including the second Drive-in Movies weekend (24–27 Sep), will be announced at a later date.
