Five of the best late night comedy shows at the Fringe

We round up some of Edinburgh's best after-hours comedy compilation shows

You're in Edinburgh in August. It's midnight, it's probably still raining and you've consumed nothing but Aperol Spritz all day. But you're not done yet. Happily, the Fringe has a long, happy tradition of funnelling tanked-up punters into claustrophobic bear pits and turning them loose on ill-prepared comedians.

Here's five of the best late-night comedy shows happening around Edinburgh in August.

Spank
For Spank veterans, the very mention of its name provokes a Pavlovian urge to reply, 'We love it!' Now in its 12th year, Spank has a longstanding tradition of performers and hosts getting their kit off. Previous guests include Rhys Darby, Josh Widdicomobe, Chris Ramsay and Adam Hills.
Underbelly, midnight, Fri 7–Sun 30 Aug, £13.50–£15.50 (£12.50–£14.50)

Just the Tonic Comedy Club – Midnight Show
Nestled within the eerie, dank confines of the Caves, in the past this long-running show has played host to Daniel Kitson, Jimmy Carr, Sarah Millican and Ross Noble.
Just the Tonic at the Caves, midnight, Fri 7–Sat 39 Aug (not Sun–Tue), £10 (£8)

The Stand Late Club
Should you find yourself wandering around the New Town, this late-night show features five acts over two hours. Guests have included Brendon Burns, Reginald D Hunter, David O'Doherty and Al Murray.
The Stand, 11.45pm, Fri 7–Sat 29 Aug (Fri & Sat only), £15 (£13)

Afterhours Comedy
Presented by Amused Moose Soho and the legendary Hils Jago, this nightly collection of comedy has previously played host to Flight of the Conchords, Tim Minchin, John Bishop and Kevin Bridges.
Assembly Roxy, 11pm, Saturdays 8–29 Aug, £14 (£12.50)

Late'n'Live
This infamous show has become a comedians' rite of passage for almost three decades. Starting at 1am, it's unpredictable, raucous and occasionally volatile. It's the source of a thousand legendary stories, some of which were collated in the BBC TV series, Late'n'Live Guide to Comedy. This year's comperes include John Hastings and the disarmingly tactile Patrick Monahan.
Gilded Balloon, 1am, Fri 7–Mon 31 Aug, £12–£16 (£11–£15)
