If you haven’t had the chance to familiarise yourself with Outlander, allow us to summarise it for you: handsome red-haired men on horseback, plucky young women looking terribly good in plaid and a load of steamy under-the-kilt action.

Based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon, the story follows Claire Randall as she walks through a stone circle, suddenly finding herself transported from 1946 to 1743 – two years before the start of the Jacobite Uprising. There she falls for Scotsman Jamie, though she can’t quite forget her husband Frank, who she left in the 20th century. We’ve all been there, right?

The series, which is available to view in the UK on Amazon Instant Video, was shot across various locations in Scotland, including Doune Castle, Culross and Linlithgow Palace. Now Linlithgow-based tour company Mary’s Meanders has created an immersive evening of Outlander-based entertainment just a stone’s throw away from where the show was filmed, allowing fans of the series to do a little culinary time travelling of their own.

The evening, named A Taste of Outlander, is MCd by a Gaelic Bard in full Jacobean dress, who kicks the event off with the calling of the clans (AKA the part where guests shout loudly when they hear their surname). Once everyone is present and accounted for, there are a series of readings and a dram to toast the occasion.

The main feature of the evening is the three-course meal, which is served by the Star & Garter Hotel, but inspired by Outlander Kitchen – a blog filled with recipes from the series. On the menu is Scotch broth, ‘gypsy stew’ (made with beef, relax) and cranachan. Each dish is served with an explanation as to its relevance to the series, and comes accompanied by a quote from the book.

After dinner, there’s traditional Scottish music courtesy of local band Boorach, Highland dancing (including the famous sword dance), a wee bit of bagpiping and further readings from the series.

The event’s organiser, Emma Chalmers said: ‘We came across Outlander just last year. We heard about the books and the filming, and because of the tours being around here I thought I wanted to do something a little bit different, something that gave people a real sense, a real taste, sound, touch of everything to do with Outlander.

‘We went through parts of the book that particularly resonated and things that we thought would connect with music and dancing’.

Well Outlander fans, better make like Jamie’s clan motto and be ready.
