Even though the local fishing industry has declined, Ayr’s long coastline lends itself to opportunities to enjoy the traditional fresh Scottish chippie by the water.

All the big towns are well-served, for example Irvine with the well-established Enzo’s (72 Ayr Road), where they fry local haddock in beef dripping for a distinctive ‘west coast taste’, as they call it. The newer Marco’s (34 Caldon Road) is Enzo’s kept-in-the-family sister outlet, while the Ship Inn sells takeout fish and chips through the Wee Catch (120–122 Harbour Street).

Other favourites include Troon’s Wee Hurrie (Harbour Road), sister chippie of the Wee Fry in Glasgow’s Bearsden, Graziano’s Harbour Café (37 Knockushan Street) in Girvan and Ayr’s 50-year-old and very well-regarded Dino’s (49 Maybole Road).

The Isle of Arran isn’t too well served for fish and chip shops, however, so at least Hooked and Cooked (The Pier, Brodick) fill the gap in two ways – they run a regular chip shop in Brodick and also a chippy van which regularly tours the island, with stops announced on Facebook in advance.
