WhatsOnStage Awards winners announced

Nine gongs for Miss Saigon as well awards for David Tennant, Billie Piper and Vanessa Kirby
Miss Saigon was crowned Best West End Show at last night's WhatsOnStage Awards. Cameron Mackintosh's musical dominated proceedings with a total haul of nine gongs, one for every category in which it was nominated bar one. The awards, now in their 15th year, are voted for by members of the public, with a focus on the London stage.
Former Doctor Who co-stars David Tennant and Billie Piper picked up the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress. Tennant won for the title role in the RSC's Richard II, while his former on-screen companion struck gold for National Theatre's Great Britain.
Former League of Gentleman Mark Gatiss won Best Supporting Actor in a Play for Coriolanus, while Vanessa Kirby triumphed as Best Supporting Actress in a Play for the Young Vic's A Streetcar Named Desire.
Celebrating Miss Saigon's success, producer Cameron Mackintosh said, 'I've always known that the public knows best.' Mackintosh, who also produced the musical during its initial run, added, 'The original production in 1989 bizarrely lost the Olivier Award for Best Musical to a rock and roll compilation show Return To The Forbidden Planet – so it's nice to see the public having the last word.'
