As well as being some sort of sports thing, last night's Super Bowl played host to a cavalcade of film trailers during its numerous commercial breaks. While there was sadly no footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, there was much else to enjoy. Here, we pick a few highlights.

Jurassic World

After three films and countless deaths, you'd think that someone somewhere would have put the kibosh on plans for another dinosaur theme park. Fortunately, that's not the case as this action packed trailer shows. Featuring nods to previous installments (such as the Gallimimus herd from Jurassic Park, and a sombre arrangement of John Williams' iconic score), hopes are high that Jurassic World will reinvigorate the franchise, not least with the lead casting of Chris Pratt, also recently rumoured to be involved in a reboot of one of Steven Spielberg's other monster franchises, Indiana Jones.

Tomorrowland

While Pirates of the Caribbean was based on a single Disney ride, Tomorrowland aims slightly bigger, and is based on the whole futuristic zone from its various theme parks. There's little to go on from this brief trailer but Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol helmer Brad Bird is a solid bet – although, with Prometheus / Lost co-writer Damon Lindeloff sharing script duties, practically anything could happen.

Furious 7

A typically bombastic trailer featuring plenty of driving, fighting and shooting (often all at once), plus a novel way of travelling from one skyscraper to another without opening any doors. This seventh entry is directed by James Wan, director of the first Saw film (another series which went on to spawn a sixth sequel) following the departure of Justin Lin for Star Trek 3. After Lin did such a remarkable job of reinvigorating the ailing series with the spectacular fifth entry, it will be interesting to see if Wan can keep the magic formula bubbling. New cast additions Jason Statham and Kurt Russell will certainly help. However, the decision to follow a melancholy shot of the late Paul Walker with an image of two cars crashing head-on may not have been the best choice in the edit suite.
