You can take to the ice this festive season with outdoor rinks across the country offering alfresco fun. Be warned: mixing mulled wine and ice skating can lead to delusions of skill.

St Andrew Square Ice Rink
Returning for a third year, the St Andrew Square Ice Rink has fast become a main attraction at Edinburgh's Christmas festivities. The oval rink circles the Melville Monument, and there's a fully stocked bar at one end to keep you hydrated. If you're not exhausted afterwards, the Scottish Market is close by on West George Street.
St Andrew Square, Edinburgh, 18 Nov–7 Jan 2016, 10am–9.30pm

Aberdeen Christmas Village Ice Rink
Aberdeen's outdoor Christmas ice rink can be found at the centrally located Union Terrace Gardens. There's also a market, funfair rides, a Christmas tree maze, an entertainment marquee and the city's Christmas tree, which is a gift from twin city Stavanger.
Union Terrace Gardens, Aberdeen, 25 Nov–8 Jan 2016, Mon–Fri 10am–10pm; Sun 11am–10pm

M&D's On Ice
Get your skates on at the theme park's open air ice rink. Spectators can enjoy festive food and keep toasty at the fire pit. Every Saturday and Sunday you can visit Santa's inn and the kids can enjoy some Christmas crafts.
