Fin Taylor: Real Talk

Charismatic, offbeat Edinburgh Festival Fringe solo debut for the charming comedian

Making his solo debut at this year's Festival is young stand-up Fin Taylor. The Fringe can be tough on new comics but Taylor copes admirably with tonight's low turnout. He takes the time to riff with the audience and build the thin crowd into the show, adding to his self-deprecating charm. And hopefully by the end of August he'll be playing to a packed venue as most of his gags are solid, quirky and very funny (including a particularly disgusting but hysterical story about three dogs in the park).

Two of his main topics are booze and porn but don't mistake it for a laddy show – it's more an attack on pretension and people who take themselves far too seriously. Taylor has an enquiring mind and points out the weirdness of everyday life that we take for granted. Despite his protestations that he never reads it's a surprisingly intelligent hour of comedy.

Unfortunately not every joke finds it's mark and Taylor stumbles once or twice, but this is a learning experience – he just needs a stronger throughline and to tighten up a few segments as he has the charisma and offbeat world view to make a quality stand-up.

Just the Tonic at The Tron, 556 5375, until 24 Aug (not 12), 10.20pm, £7.50 – £9.50 (£6.50--£8.50).
