5. Shrek 2
The follow up to the hugely successful Shrek, featured an impressive ensemble cast who provide real vitality and humour to a strong script. It not only equalled its predecessor but in many ways surpassed it, eliminating certain elements which made the first Shrek occasionally obnoxious. Special mention must be made to Antonio Banderas for his hilarious portrayal of Puss in Boots, a character so memorable that it led to a (rather decent) spin-off film of his own.
4. Fantasia 2000
This sequel did for the ‘noughty’ generation what the original achieved with that of the 40s: it brought classical music to the consciousness of children. Sticking to a similar formula which made the original Fantasia one of the cherished gems of Disney’s Golden Age, this sequel added beautiful hypnotic animation that is often a joy to behold, featuring some moving classical interpretations by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
3. Toy Story 2
One of the most anticipated sequels (animated or otherwise) of all time. Woody, Buzz and the gang were this timed joined by the quirky and vibrant Jess, who added a fresh dynamic to the comedy without detracting from the unshakeable chemistry that exists between Woody and Buzz. It seemed a more assured effort than the original, with faster and wittier dialogue between the characters to accompany Pixar’s wonderful and warm animation.
2. Kung Fu Panda 2
One of the real surprise animated successes of the past decade, Kung Fu Panda 2 is a sensation from beginning to end. DreamWorks’ animation has never looked more spectacular, the fight scenes are hilarious and impressive in equal measure and by the conclusion you are left feeling that there are a good deal more side-splitting scenarios that Po could find himself in; a perfect example of getting the best out of a good thing.
1. Toy Story 3
The key to a successful franchise is quite simply: evolve and improve, whilst staying true to what made it great in the first place. This is exactly what Pixar did with Toy Story. Toy Story 3 has just about everything film-goers young and old could want from an animated production. It’s entertaining whilst being sensitive, dramatic yet restrained and warm but never saccharine; a complete tour de force of animated technology and universal story telling. If you haven’t shown this to your kids, please do so tonight... before bedtime of course.
