Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson star in the new trailer for upcoming HBO drama True Detective, a creepy crime drama set in Louisiana. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know that the pair will feature in an initial eight-episode series starting in January, with multiple timelines used to depict the detective's search for a serial killer. The series also stars Michelle Monaghan and The Wire's Michael Potts, and is written by Nic Pizzolatto (who has writing credits on the US version of The Killing) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre).

From what we can see in the trailer, there's an occult element to the crimes that echoes Twin Peaks (with Louisiana's rural countryside standing in for the mountains of Washington state). A Blair Witch-y stick sculpture is found at a crime scene, in addition to some weird-looking runes and animal remains. There's some significant religious imagery too, suggesting this is going to be more metaphysical and soul-searching than your average police procedural – 'something deep and dark', as McConaughey's Detective Rust Cohle says at the end of the trailer.

What with the pedigree of talent involved (with McConaughey in particular on a hot streak these days), we're very much look forward to seeing what else True Detective uncovers.

True Detective will air on Sky Atlantic in 2014.
