Rambling but hilarious show from the actor and comedian

There’s a lectern stocked with topical notes pulled from recent news stories that Janeane Garofalo keeps returning to refresh her mind after previous stories wander off track. That’s how we get from an in-depth discussion of why she can never go back to regular underwear after discovering the joys of Spanx to hand jobs as a replacement for sex via the conceit of destination weddings without really batting an eyelid.

What the show lacks in structure it makes up for in laughs – Garofalo truly does have funny bones and is keen to please an audience she interprets as somewhat bewildered. However, an extended and rambling discussion of what her ultimate goals in life are (Puppy Bowl host, bead store owner and professional pill addict) is enough to win over the most hardened of hearts.

She's petite and snarky, with a lot to say – so much so, she is visibly spooked on stage to see the appearance of a security guard to let her know she's gone way over her curfew. It's a shame as there was still so much more to discuss, which is where a more structured show would have come in handy. Good thing she's so dang funny.

The Assembly Rooms, 0844 693 3008, until 23 Aug, 10.45pm, £15.
