Matt Green is almost amazed still to be alive. When he reads out the official list of how many people in the UK died from certain causes last year (everything from falling down stairs to bee stings), it certainly makes you pause for thought (and temporarily has you reconsidering ever going down some stairs or venturing outside ever again).

There’s no doubt that Green is an amiable act and with a decent line in self-deprecation (often told that he has a face from the past, his look tonight is ‘teenager at a funeral’), and he is also blessed with a voice that is Radio 4 to its core. His story rather too often deviates from his theme, shoehorning stories in from his club set (comics both male and female hitting out at misogynistic language has been a recurring motif this year), but when he maintains the thread, there are some fine anecdotes.

One particular highlight is his telling of an incident in his kitchen which slowly and surreally became a life-threatening scenario. Green struggles slightly with the crowd in tonight, pausing to wait for a laugh where none has been forthcoming, slightly derailing the rhythm of his show. But the seasoned pro that he is, it doesn’t take too long to get the script back on track.
