Award-winning show combining theatre, music and film returns

RACHEL SERMANNI

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
Depends on the moon … sleeping.

Any memorable exceptions, recently?
Two nights ago I attended three house parties in one after-gig spree through the streets of Halifax.

What gets you through the night?
A good day.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
I try to give myself a reiki, and if that fails I might do a range of things: put pen to paper in the dark, embrace frustration and feel sorry for myself, or give in to the needle glow of my iPhone and browse other people's lives in a reasonably unhealthy manner.

Late night hunger – where do you go?
I might go for the cereal cupboard. If I had one. That's why I don't have one. I had a chicken shawarma the night of the three parties.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
Airplane mode.

Clothing – on or off at night?
Maybe that depends on the moon too.

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
I rarely do anything. You might think I'm dead.

Do you remember your dreams?
Yes. Frequently. And I write them down.

What’s the last nightmare you remember?
A man with a big head was standing in a corner, glaring at me and making me feel intruded upon. I had to swing my head at him and scream 'Hail Mary' to show I wasn't afraid. I woke up, a passenger on a plane, with my head lollopped forward. I hope I didn't scream Hail Mary out loud.

Any memories of nuits blanches in Edinburgh over the festival that you’d care to share?
Not really. I once shared a whisky at the jazz club. I am still to be properly baptised with a nuit blanche in Edinburgh. I like the term ‘nuit blanche’.

EMMA POLLOCK

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
Usually considering going to bed, but if there’s a good DVD boxset/ book/ website/ conversation/ tennis match on the go I usually won’t make it very fast. I tend to get a second wind around about midnight.

Any memorable exceptions, recently?
I stayed up very late to hear the US Open final (tennis) when I was on tour with RM Hubbert last September. We were in a Leicester Travelodge. Mr Hubbert isn’t so much of a tennis fan but he kindly stayed with me whilst I whooped and hollered my way through to the end. I think I woke everyone up in that hotel when AM won.

What gets you through the night?
In summer, the window open come rain or shine. I love the noise of the city at night. In winter, the cats, and single malt.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
Very rare – I sleep like a log unless there’s a particularly relevant Grand Slam final the next day. (I’m getting a bit alarmed now at the amount of tennis references I’m making here.)

Late night hunger – where do you go?
I just look forward to a bigger breakfast the next morning.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
Muted.

Clothing – on or off at night?
None of your business.

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
None. (Apparently.)

Do you remember your dreams?
Sometimes I try to write them down if they were particularly fascinating. Unfortunately they’re usually not, although I did dream about Andy Murray the night before the Wimbledon final which my husband found a little disconcerting.

What’s the last nightmare you remember?
My husband made me watch Paranormal Activity one night when our bedroom was being decorated. There was fresh plaster on the wall, the bed was in the wrong place, there were no curtains and there was only a single lightbulb in the room with no shade. I think I may have had a few nightmares that night.

RICKY ROSS

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
In bed.

Any memorable exceptions, recently?
Our late dog (bless her) was slightly confused and refused to come in at night. I therefore spent a few nights running around the garden in underwear. It’s all stopped now.

What gets you through the night?
Silence helps.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
I quote my mother: ‘I was awake for a while then I remembered I’d taped Midsomer Murders. That got me over.’

Late night hunger – where do you go?
Don’t …you’ll regret it.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
Depends how many of my children are still out and about.

Clothing – on or off at night?
Oversharing, I feel.

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
Probably.

Do you remember your dreams?
For 4 secs … then they are gone.

What’s the last nightmare you remember?
I was invited to play guitar for Roy Harper. I suspect he too has that same nightmare.

Any memories of nuits blanches in Edinburgh over the festival that you’d care to share?
I imagined everyone just did what I would do: take the train home.

RM HUBBERT

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
In front of the computer. Or driving.

What gets you through the night?
Video games, dubious kebabs and a very grumpy dog.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
That’s pretty much every night. I write. Quietly.

Late night hunger – where do you go?
I live in Troon. One option. The garage.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
On.

Clothing – on or off at night?
Off.

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
I snore like a motherfucker. Apparently.

Do you remember your dreams?
Rarely.

KIERAN HURLEY

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
In bed, I’m afraid. It wasn’t always thus …

Any memorable exceptions, recently?
The other week, getting slowly drunk and talking pish around a campfire with some good mates who I don’t see often enough. That was good.

What gets you through the night?
That entirely depends.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
I don’t suffer from insomnia. But when I can’t sleep, I read.

Late night hunger – where do you go?
Fridge. Or kebab. Depending on circumstance.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
On, for the alarm. But calls and stuff set to silent, to avoid potential rude awakenings from ill-judged drunken or early morning texts.

Clothing – on or off at night?
Now, now …

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
Naw. I don’t think so anyway. I used to grind my teeth when I was stressed out, but I think I’ve somehow cut that out.

Do you remember your dreams?
Yeah. At first. Then the details rapidly fade. There was one recently where I was part of a renegade activist group who wanted independence for Wales, except I kept letting the side down by not being able to speak Welsh. (I’m not Welsh).

What’s the last nightmare you remember?
I’ve not had a full-blown nightmare for ages. Very occasionally an anxiety dream maybe. But they’re usually just boring things about work. Come to see any of my shows, and imagine something awful and embarrassing happening to me at the same time and you more or less have the picture.

Any memories of nuits blanches in Edinburgh over the festival that you’d care to share?
I grew up in Edinburgh, so I have really fond memories from when I was a teenager, going out in town, during the festival when the clubs are open ‘til 5, and big groups of us piling back from town on foot to Restalrig or Porty, through Holyrood Park in full morning light …

ANDREW EATON-LEWIS, from Swimmer One

Where are you usually to be found between midnight and 4am?
I sense you’re angling for, ‘out, drunk, having outrageously exciting’ type answers here, but I’m a new parent so I’m generally I’m in bed, hoping my nine-month old daughter doesn’t wake up and demand the milk which I’ve forgotten to make and put in the fridge.

Any memorable exceptions, recently?
Does ‘in bed somewhere different from usual’ count? We camped out on beaches a couple of times during the July heatwave. So same as above, except with lapping waves and a small child’s foot in my face.

What gets you through the night?
White wine, giant chocolate buttons and DVD boxsets.

When insomnia strikes, what do you reach for?
Insomnia, the Christopher Nolan film. Which is probably rubbing salt into the wound but there you go.

Late night hunger – where do you go?
If I’m at home, the box of Special K on top of the fridge. Or if it’s not too late, Keane’s House Chinese takeaway in Portobello.

Mobile phone – on or off at night?
On, checking Facebook and Twitter ‘til stupid o’clock.

Clothing – on or off at night?
Off. He said, racily.

Do you sleepwalk/ grind your teeth/ snore/ talk in your sleep?
I snore, much to my embarrassment. But I’ve never walked anywhere or grinded anything, as far as I know.

Do you remember your dreams?
Incredibly vividly for five minutes after I wake up, during which time I frantically write them down, convinced I’ve unconsciously come up with a fantastic idea for a book/screenplay/album/formula for world peace. Then I realise they actually make no sense whatsoever and scribble it all out. Then I forget them entirely.

What’s the last nightmare you remember?
See above.

Any memories of nuits blanches in Edinburgh over the festival that you’d care to share?
I had to look up ‘nuits blanches’. I’ve only ever stayed up very late in Edinburgh drinking, I’m afraid. I didn’t go to [all-night theatre production] Hotel Medea, and have never even been to Late N Live. But I have had at least a couple of very intense, life-changing conversations in places like Black Bo’s, if that counts.
