Detours is a series of intimate live performances, running as part of Edinburgh Art Festival and offering events which dip in and out of different genres, blurring the lines between different art forms for both artist and audience.

'I think the opportunity to experience visual art alongside other art forms will inevitably open up different perspectives,' says Sorcha Carey, Director of Edinburgh Art Festival. 'I wanted our programme to give artists and audiences the opportunity to do something they wouldn't normally do.'

Exploring how different genres can both conflict and complement, highlights include Billy Letford – poet and roofer – performing in the Conde Nast 'Coming Into Fashion' show at City Art Centre ('He's a very Scottish voice and the chance to hear him perform amidst the glamour of fashion shoots makes for an interesting contrast', according to Carey). Meanwhile, Roddy Woomble's set at the Dovecot Studios' 'Following the Thread' exhibition showcases the balancing nature of two seemingly different art forms: contemporary folk and contemporary art coming together in an unexpected place.

Children are encouraged to embrace the concept as well, with family-friendly art and music workshops and EAF Explorers – a trail throughout the festival designed for kids to explore the city's main art galleries, picking up treats along the way.

‘I hope the audiences will come away feeling that they have been opened up to something new,’ adds Carey, ‘having experienced the gallery spaces in a way they don’t normally see.’
