Biffy Clyro are the latest Scottish musicians to have nominated a few of their countrymen for Scotland's Music Hall of Fame. The new project, which aims to open in Glasgow in early 2015, will pay tribute to Scotland's rock and pop heritage, and has already been talked up by KT Tunstall and The Proclaimers. Biffy's Simon Neil, James Johnston and Ben Johnston chose Aereogramme, Annie Lennox and Mogwai as their respective nominations for entry into the Hall of Fame (even offering a small sample of each artist's music). Their choices offer a good grasp of the breadth and diversity of Scotland's contemporary music output: politically-active pop queen Lennox was the subject of an exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery this year; post-rock outfit (and Rock Action founders) Mogwai recently premiered the live performance of their soundtrack to Douglas Gordon's Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, and provided the soundtrack to excellent French TV series The Returned; and while dynamic post-rockers Aereogramme sadly disbanded in 2007, guitarist Iain Cook went to be one of the co-founders of world-conquering electropop outfit Chvrches.
Twin Atlantic, Big Country's Bruce Watson and Frightened Rabbit are among the bands and artists who will offer their Hall of Fame nominations in the coming months, while Emeli Sande, Paolo Nutini and Lennox herself have been among the advocates of the project. Scotland's music-loving public are also encouraged to add their own suggestions on Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #MYHOF3.
