Camping pods - Brodick Castle, Arran
With its great location, just a 55-minute ferry ride from Glasgow’s west coast, there’s little you can’t do in Arran – from water sports, biking and walking to eating, drinking and historic discoveries. So it goes without saying that the very recent additions of three rather cute hobbit-style pods in Brodick Castle Gardens have tickled our camping fancy. Set at the bottom of a pretty windy pass is Shore Lodge – a 14-bed self-catering accommodation space, just across the road from the beach – where pod campers are free to use all the amenities (toilets and washing, cooking and laundry facilities etc). Next door you’ll find three carpeted pods, sleeping from 2–5 people, and each kitted out with a small fridge, heater and kettle. We like muchly.

The Pilot Panther - Balquhidder
We can’t lie, since The List stayed in Monachyle Mhor’s Lovestruck last year, we’ve had a serious soft spot for the Mhor enterprise, and this latest gem from their camp should certainly raise a smile. Set close to the foodie restaurant haven for which Mhor is best known, the Pilot Panther is a 1950s showman’s wagon-cum-self-catering hideaway with stunning views over Loch Voil. Each of the windows in this uber-cool space offer fantastic vistas, with just enough distance from the main house to make you feel like you’re home alone. Off the main living and sleeping space is a decent bunk area, and there is even an oven and grill should you want to DIY. Sure, you have to walk to the main house for loos and showers and it is a bit pricey, but this unique little spot makes it worth the effort.

Pot-A-Doodle-Do - Berwick-Upon-Tweed
Handily situated on the Northumbrian coastline, the cutely named Pot-A-Doodle Do, with its dozen or so wigwams, is cheap, cheerful and in a great location. This is a happy camp for all ages, where pals, couples and kiddies happily co-exist, making use of the beach nearby for picnics (Scottish weather allowing) and the crafts on offer in the main building, from painting plates to designing trinket boxes. The wigwams sleep up to five and come complete with electricity, small fridge and table, while the communal building contains a lounge room, cooker and washing machine.

Shepherd Huts - Skye
Rescue donkeys Gilbert and George happily reside nearby in their boutique stables, somewhat setting the scene for what Janet and Cecil Ward’s Shepherd Huts glamping venture is all about. Opened in April of this year, two beautiful bijou huts sit on their croft in the village of Heaste, on the Isle of Skye. Inside, things are done to a high spec with wood-burning stove and great insulation, as well as all the crockery you’d expect from a decent self-catering pad. There’s even a gas BBQ at your disposal next to a fire pit should you fancy some alfresco dining.
