Kurt Vonnegut's seminal anti-war/sci-fi satire Slaughterhouse-Five is rumoured to be the source material for a new movie adaptation - with Pacific Rim/Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind/Synecdoche New York writer Charlie Kaufman the creative minds behind it. The novel follows American soldier Billy Pilgrim as he time-travels through different phases of his life, with the centrepiece being his eye-witnessing of the American firebombing of Dresden towards the end of WWII.

The film has been adapted once before, by The Sting/Butch Cassidy director George Roy Hill in 1972. The film was a critical success (Vonnegut himself commended it), but a box office disappointment - it remains to be seen whether or not any studio in line to finance the new adaptation will bear this in mind, considering del Toro's last adap project (HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness) stalled in development hell.
