Hogmanay 2012: Glasgow and Edinburgh events round-up

A round up of the best New Year events outside of Edinburgh’s official Hogmanay celebrations
In Glasgow, there’s a whole programme of events on Hogmanay Day (George Square, 31 Dec), featuring kids’ storytelling, highland dancing and traditional/ceilidh music. There’ll also be a touch of trad at the Ashton Lane Street Party (31 Dec), courtesy of special guests Sketch, alongside street performers, pipers, DJs and fireworks. The Raymond Gubbay Christmas Festival Hogmanay Gala (Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 31 Dec) will herald the new year with music of a more classical variety, while the Fence Collective will host their alt.folk/indie hogmanay bash at Mono (31 Dec).
On the comedy scene, Jongleurs’ New Year’s Eve line-up features Janey Godley, Dougie Dunlop, Patrick Rolink and Des Clarke (31 Dec), while The Stand’s Hogmanay Hootfest features Jo Caulfield, John Gillick, James Kirk and host Raymond Mearns (and runs from 27–31 Dec). The Stand’s new year celebrations also extend into the east – Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Hootfest features Tom Stade, Vladimir McTavish, Keir McAllister and Bruce Devlin (and runs from 27 Dec–2 Jan).
Elsewhere in the capital, Afore the Bells (Queen’s Hall, 31 Dec), Edinburgh’s Grand Hogmanay Ball (Assembly Rooms, 31 Dec) and the Hogmanay Hoot (Corn Exchange, 31 Dec) all offer food and drink on the approach to the bells, accompanied by music of a trad/ceilidh variety. There’s also a spot of traditional Scottish tuneage at the Hogmanay Tartan Hoot (Captains Bar, 31 Dec) and the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra’s Hogmanay Celebration (Usher Hall, 31 Dec).
One of our favourite venues this past year has been Summerhall, and they look set to carry on their commitment to great events programming with their Hogmanay Party (31 Dec), featuring film screenings, ‘surprise theatre’, live music and club sounds. The Drambuie Surreal Sessions (Tron Kirk, 30 Dec–1 Jan) aim to foster a similarly unpredictable atmosphere with performances, installations, screenings, clubs and live music at the newly resurrected Tron Kirk.
