Quentin Tarantino has just unveiled the trailer for his latest project, Django Unchained - a western that's already caught our attention thanks to an A-list cast including Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz and featuring guest spots from Samuel L Jackson and the RZA. And yet, among all the usual trappings of a Tarantino film - sassy soundtrack, snappy dialogue - we noticed the director's been taking a few fashion tips from elsewhere...

Blazing Saddles

To a certain mind, the story of a freed black slave in the old west is always going to bring to mind the tale of Black Bart (Cleavon Little), the sheriff in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles. Once he's picked up his commission as sheriff for the town of Rock Ridge, Bart gets kitted out in a Gucci, showed off in a series of catalogue poses in the desert. Not unlike Jamie Foxx's Django, it seems.

Rubberbandits

Sure, we could have looked at those bag-headed bandits and seen the burlap-faced train robbers from The Assassination of Jesse James, but we'd rather have a gander at how such stylistic bravado would be carried off today. Plus, the cowboy link remains - the Rubberbandits have a horse outside.

Gangs of New York

Not so strange, this one, considering Gangs of New York and Django Unchained are roughly contemporaneous. Although it is worth noting that DiCaprio, with his scarlett coat and natty waistcoat, is just a stovepipe hat away from his Gangs nemesis, Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis).

KFC

Knowing Tarantino, there's every chance the Sanders-alike featured in Django Unchained is meant to be the real deal - he had no qualms about twisting history to his own ends in Inglourious Basterds. If not, the two are at least remarkably similar.

Austin Powers

There's no denying it - the blue velour, the cravat, it all screams international man of mystery. Why would Tarantino cram it into a western where it surely doesn't belong? Unless it's a nod to Mike Myers' cameo in Basterds, we have no idea.
