Novelist William Boyd has revealed that he will be the third author to step into the shoes of Ian Fleming's to write the next 007 book, but says he won't be relying on gadgets to create his 'classic' Bond.

The Glasgow University graduate will write a new novel to be published by Jonathan Cape in autumn 2013, 60 years after Casino Royale, Fleming's first Bond book, was published. Although the novel is still untitled, Boyd has revealed a desire to return to 'classic Bond' with a late 1960s setting.

Boyd is best known for his novels Any Human Heart and Restless, and released his most recent book, Waiting for Sunrise, in February this year. The Guardian reported that the author had accepted the 'once in a lifetime challenge' as he called it, saying 'the prospect appeared incredibly exciting and stimulating.'

He said that his father introduced him to the novels in the 1960s and that his favourite is From Russia With Love. He was approached by the Ian Fleming Estate to be the latest novelist to write a new Bond book after the death of original author Fleming in 1964.

Boyd follows in the footsteps of writers Sebastian Faulks and Jeffrey Deaver who have each published Bond novels. Faulks' book, Devil May Care, was released in 2008 for what would have been Fleming's 100th birthday. After that, American novelist Deaver published Carte Blanche in 2011 which featured more modern references such as phone apps and the war in Afghanistan.

However, Boyd has made it clear that he will be moving away from the modernised Bond films and Deaver's contemporary narrative. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said "I don't quite see the point of moving the novel forward in time. What's fascinating about Fleming and Bond is the time in which it's set.

"The films in a way rely on cars and gadgets but in a novel, describing some kind of elaborate gadget isn't quite the same as seeing it on screen."
