A dark comedy from writer/director/star Matt D'Elia
This one looks interesting... Matt D'Elia writes, directs and stars in the story of Jimmy, a terminally ill (and, from the evidence available, totally unhinged) young man who discovers his best friend and roommate James (Brendan Fletcher) is getting a job. As James gets ready to embrace the real world, Jimmy feels that their 'perfect' shared existence is under threat, and becomes deeply embroiled in a battle of wills with James to maintain their slacker status quo.
American Animal looks to be a darkly humourous art house affair, with bright, lurid colours matching Jimmy's larger-than-life persona. In a neat bit of viral marketing, D'Elia has created a Twitter account for Jimmy - the perfect outlet for sporadic bursts of megalomania. Highlights include, 'I'm like vampires. I can't die and I'm sexy as shit', 'I sing opera whenever the fuck I want. And when I do, I'm an opera singer' and 'My favorite actor: Marlon Brando (I'm him most of the time). My dog's favorite actor: Jimmy Pistol (he's me).'
Still no UK release date as yet, but it hits American theatres on Fri 18 May.
