The Dillinger Escape Plan deserve every single penny they make out of tonight’s gig. Their onstage energy is so unrelenting that you ponder if they’ll collapse post-show and perish in a putrid pile of sweat.

For the uninitiated, the band’s music will probably sound like four grizzly bears fighting whilst ten toddlers ‘play’ the drums – but to the initiated it is curious experimentations with the boundaries of heavy music.

It’s the more melodic cuts however that impress tonight, with ‘Black Bubblegum’ a gritty, juddering salvo infused with electronic swagger (no ‘Jagger’ here, however) whilst ‘Milk Lizard’ is ripe ground for a giddy singalong.

But it’s with their atypical fare, short blasts of pure blitzkrieg math-metal, when things really get going on stage – ‘Panasonic Youth’, for example, sees the band chuck their bodies and their instruments around like a ballet troupe gone absolutely bananas. Indeed, their live show – and their music – is often so unpredictable and out of control, it’s a wonder to think that these five men are in so much control over all of it. It is a spellbinding performance, regardless of your musical persuasion, and firmly reiterates how much of a must-see live act The Dillinger Escape Plan are.
