BODEGA's ascent in the UK has been a steep one, since the Brooklyn band's whip smart 'How Did This Happen?' (and it's strikingly clever music video) hit the airwaves. As discussed on their first album Endless Scroll, smartphones have ruined our attention spans and are killing our brain cells by the second, so perhaps there's logic to returning with the follow-up, stat, before our weak minds fail us and we forget they ever existed.

The mini album Shiny New Model serves that purpose, and more besides. While BODEGA have a lot in common with their fellow New Yorkers Parquet Courts (rapidly delivered lyrics concerned with the meaning of life and the absurdity of existing, plus a clear post-punk and new wave influence), they have their own identity and plenty of substance. Shiny New Model leaves you wanting more, and you sense that's the point. It's seven tracks show a band augmenting their sound, building on their early promise, using their first proper bit 'studio time' to show off their range.

Much of this record is exceptional, in particular the ten minute closer 'Truth Is Not Punishment', which kicks like Television, before venturing into a glorious – and improvised – groove laden jam. The opening title track is the band's most melodically rewarding track to date, more so than 'Jack In Titanic' even, with guitars reminiscent of REM's Peter Buck shimmering around Ben Hozie's meditations on consumerism. The funky, but unsettling five-note riff that carries 'Domesticated Animal' is another highlight, complete with another compelling ramble of a lead vocal – 'I'll never be more than the comforts that I seek' – this time from Nikki Belfiglio. For a record that opens with a warning, 'you'll be replaced', it's a buoyant statement of intent. There's a lot of noise jostling for space, but on this evidence BODEGA will hold their own, and hold our attention, for as long as they want.
