Jordan Brookes: I've Got Nothing

Another convention-busting hour from a singular talent
There's no such thing as a conventional Jordan Brookes show, nor is there any such thing as a passive audience member. Not that he's getting folk up on stage, it's nothing as simple as that. Instead, he challenges our role as an audience: the gaze is thrown back, we're looking at him so he's going to have a stare back at us. He sits down at one point: 'what you got? I've got nothing. Haven't you even imagined what it might be like?'
There's a danger of giving too much away as the not-knowing is one of the big joys here. Is it different every night? It's probably scripted, but is it? Does the tech even know what her cues are? The theme for Brookes this year, rather aptly, is the probable imminent end of the world, and he's toying with how it might happen. Always one to embrace the discomfort factor in a crowd pondering what-if scenarios, there's a parallel joy in seeing the audience squirm. Elsewhere the tropes of stand-up are poked fun at too, while he also manages to get some very funny gags in there. This is another Jordan Brookes show with beautiful physicality, probing intelligence and unexpected laughter.
Pleasance Courtyard, until 25 Aug, 9.30pm, £9–£11 (£8–£10).
