A criticism often levelled at the gay scene, both in Glasgow and Edinburgh, is that there’s a dearth of club nights for women – particularly women over the age of 30. Fed up with this situation, a quartet of Glasgow girls are launching an alternative club night, Ruby Fruit, which aims to attract a diverse crowd.

‘We are hoping to make it a regular club night for lesbians on all the Sunday bank holiday weekends,’ says Deirdre Campbell, one of the organisers. ‘Ruby Fruit music will be everything from 60s through to present day, an uplifting mix of funky, soul, disco, indie, handbag and dance music; basically every kind of dance music that you want from a club but that you can’t get on the gay scene – we will have the odd Pink/Madonna record thrown in now and again but it certainly won’t dominate the night.’

Campbell and her colleagues were inspired in setting up Ruby Fruit by Lower the Tone, a lesbian night held at the Oak Bar in North London and run by the renowned gay Artist Sadie Lee. Lee has even been in touch to offer her advice.

‘We hope it’s popular – we are not in it for the money but just to provide something for our community which the Glasgow gay scene does not provide for us funky ladies,’ says Campbell. ‘We thought there was no point in moaning that there was no gay venue to cater for us so we decided to get off our bahookies and do something about it.’
