Auntie Midgie
Answering all your travel queries
Q: I want to go somewhere utterly different? Suggestions please, Auntie Midgie?
A: If you want to escape it all, then head for one of Scotland’s remote little islands. Your Auntie Midgie’s favourites include Eigg, Muck and Canna. Each of these Hebridean islands has its own story to tell and, although remote, you will become part of a buzzing and friendly local community and will likely make more new friends than your pen-pal correspondence can cope with. This, my lovelies, is called ‘island hospitality’ – and there is nothing quite like it.
Q: What’s your best budgeting tips for backpackers?
A: Well, firstly, it’s important to keep track of your spending and work out a weekly budget. Factor in a few lemonade shandies by all means, but try and be sensible. Make sure you have enough money for your basics (hostel accommodation and food), seek part-time work if need be and keep an ‘emergency fund’. Other than that, I’d take note of these lyrics from the ‘Money Song’ by Dean Martin: ‘If you got it you don't need it; if you need it you don't got it.’ Wise words.
