O2 Academy Edinburgh launches with a 3000 capacity venue

Academy Music Group takes over the award-winning Corn Exchange with an exciting list of top gigs confirmed for the coming year
The music scene in Edinburgh has been given a boost with the announcement that the Corn Exchange venue is being acquired by Academy Music Group. This category B listed building was built in 1909 and in recent years has played host to the likes of Blur, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Grace Jones and Oasis, while most recently it laid on a month of comedy at this year's Edinburgh Fringe. But now the live-music ante has been raised with the arrival of the O2 Academy Edinburgh.
'We've been keen to expand our O2 Academy brand in Scotland for some time and we're delighted to now be in Edinburgh, an inspiring city with a thriving appetite for music and culture,' says Graham Walters, chief operating officer at Academy Music Group. 'We see huge potential with this venue which fits with our ethos of investing in heritage buildings, with the right capacity of 3000 to bring world-class entertainment to the city. It also has a number of diverse secondary spaces that we'll be looking at over the coming months to complement programming and events in the main auditorium.'
So what's on the roster for the brand new O2 Academy Edinburgh with its new state-of-the-art sound and lighting production facilities? First up is Declan McKenna (Friday 3 September), the politically conscious singer-songwriter who first hit he spotlight when he won the Glastonbury Festival's Emerging Talent Competition in 2015 followed by Tom Grennan (Thursday 9 September) who had his first top ten hit with this year's 'Little Bit Of Love', while the launch month's line-up is completed by the legendary CHIC feat. Nile Rogers (Tuesday 21 September).
Into October and in bursts Yungblud (Monday 11 October) with tracks from his two wonderfully-titled albums to date, 21st Century Liability and Weird!, while Australian three-piece rock act DMA'S arrive for a two-night shift (Monday 18 & Tuesday 19 October). Rory Graham aka Rag'n'Bone Man (Tuesday 26 October) shows up with a new album, Life By Misadventure (featuring a duet with Pink) under his belt, and The Snuts (Thursday 28 October) are the first local lads to play the new venue, fresh from rocking the Edinburgh International Festival.
As the nights get longer, the fun gets stronger with Welsh metal band Bullet For My Valentine (Monday 1 November), English punks Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes (Tuesday 23 November) and Northern Ireland DJ duo Bicep (Tuesday 7 December), And in the midst of the festive season comes The Charlatans (Tuesday 21 December) whose leader Tim Burgess was a veritable Santa by keeping the nation's spirits high during all the lockdowns with his Twitter Listening Party.
Into 2022 and the venue goes synth-pop wild with Glasgow's CHVRCHES (Monday 13 March), while Jake Bugg (Monday 21 March) celebrates the release of his fifth album, Saturday Night, Sunday Morning, and Philadelphia's The War On Drugs (Monday 18 April) enter the fray on the back of their 2021 album I Don't Live Here Anymore. May ushers in pioneering electro king Gary Numan (Monday 9 May) and Welsh singer-songwriting wizard Marina (Tuesday 17 May) while a month later we witness that force of alt-rock nature that is Beck (Tuesday 14 June).
The new Edinburgh venue adds to the Academy Music Group's portfolio of O2 venues which began in 2009, and which now includes O2 Academy Glasgow and London's O2 Academy Brixton and O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire. 'The new O2 Academy Edinburgh is a brilliant addition to our O2 Academy estate,' adds Gareth Griffiths, head of sponsorship at O2. 'It's a beautiful venue, and as entertainment begins to return, this further demonstrates O2 and Academy Music Group's commitment to enhancing the live industry in Scotland, one of the best places to watch music in the UK.'
