Refugee Week 2009
The film aspect of this national festival exploring the refugee experience which also includes workshops, art exhibitions, comedy nights, sports events and much more is bigger than ever this year. In Glasgow the UK premiere of Doug Aubrey and Peri Ibrahim’s documentary Kurdi about Saddam Hussein’s persecution of the Kurdish people opens the festival with a Q&A with the filmmakers afterward. The Scottish Refugee Council will introduce a screening of The Kite Runner and Swedish children’s comedy Kids in Da Hood about living in a very alternative family offers some light relief. In Edinburgh Fernand Melgar’s disturbing film The Fortress (pictured) examines the workings of an austere refugee processing centre in Vallorbe, Switzerland.
