Exposure: We Were Promised Jetpacks

The Scottish music scene is enjoying a rich harvest of young bands with big sounds right now. Like their friends Frightened Rabbit and Twilight Sad, We Were Promised Jetpacks boast big tunes, wrenchingly vulnerable vocals over towering guitars and the sound of fun dripping from every riff. With an appearance at Hinterland coming up, I spoke to Sean from the band.

How did the band meet?
We met each other in pairs at different primary schools in Edinburgh. Adam and Michael were in the Gylemuir guitar group and me and Darren met in the Roseburn rhythm section. I then met Adam in Ms Gourlay's computer class when we were 14 and have been playing music together since.

What are the influences that WWPJ have?
Other bands that are really good and make you think, feel. Musically we are beginning to love being really loud. And we want every new song we write to better than our last one. We might be getting worse though, we haven't figured that one out yet.

Being friends with the likes of Frightened Rabbit and Twilight Sad, do you feel that Scottish bands are coming back to the fore?
I’m sure there have always been great Scottish bands. Those are two of our favourite bands and they always will be. I think they are brilliant and deserve all their plaudits.

What made you sign to Fatcat? Did they promise and have they delivered jetpacks as yet?
We talked about labels and decided that we weren't that bothered for a while and that the only one we would probably say definitely yes to would be fatcat. And then when we found out they wanted to work with us there was no way we could say no.

How's the album coming along and what can we expect from it?
Album's finished and is coming out on June 15th. I just got a call from my mum saying that it had been leaked and was available everywhere. I’ve no idea how she knew. I think you can expect it to be less of a loud fast rock album than our early demos were.

Has your music changed much between first breaking and recording?
I think we were a lot poppier and more of a Futureheads/Bloc Party sound when we were younger, but when we heard how beautiful Frightened Rabbit’s music is and then seeing how loud and amazing the Twilight Sad were, we seemed to change slightly but still keep the pop tendencies whilst still using party drums. We were just picking up some momentum - then we went into the studio!

What's the lead single going to be?
Quiet Little Voices oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

What has Scotland brought to your music?
A slightly Scottish accent, a certain sense of humour and a self-depreciation that I think is important.

What are your plans for the rest of 2009?
To try and really enjoy being in a band with friends and touring in a lot of places that ordinarily we would never get to. We release our album in June then will tour that, do some festivals, then tour some more. Who knows after that!
