It's been too long, but you know how it is - one thing leads to another and then it's Christmas time again. Anyway the time has come to check up on the progress of the second film competition helmed by Scotland's leading production house and No1 arts and listings magazine (that's us by the way).

To recap - back in December 2006, The List launched Metro's One Minute Wonder Film Competition and invited scripts on the theme of 'Wild'. Juries were put together, over 100 scripts came in and five lucky winning writers saw their films made to the highest professional standards. The films were simultaneously premiered at the 2007 EIFF and on The List website and then all involved got together and decided they wanted to do it all over again, but differently.

And so it was that the Short Film Competition was born last winter. This time we invited three minute scripts on the subject of 'Big'. Juries were formed, over 200 entries came in, a shortlist selection of writers were sent off to screenplay boot camp and finally a trio of winners emerged. And so it was that Metro put Jan Storie's Learning Curves, Margherita Still's Milk Girl and Heather Day's Big Mistake into turnaround.

So far Day's Big Mistake has been completed (pictured) and it's an absolute gem. I met up with Metro MD Oscar Askin and the producer of all three films Barry Paton to get a status report.

'We are just putting the finishing touches to Big Mistake. It was directed by Adrian Mead and was shot over two days out near Penicuik, we had to close the road off for two days. We are taking our time this time we really don't want to skimp on quality but we also need to keep up with our corporate work to make sure we are financially stable enough to support a project we all believe in.'

Having missed out on Scottish Screen funding earlier this year the project has become more than a labour of love for both men. Askin explains: 'This competition is fantastic and this new film looks amazing, I think the rewards far outweigh the many struggles. At the end of the day these winner's are going to walk away with a finished film that has been made to the highest professional standards we can muster. And then we'll move on to the next competition.'

Filming will start soon on Milk Girl and Learning Curves and it is hoped they will be ready to be premiered in the New Year. The List, as always, will keep you posted.
