Gina Rae and Sandy Wright - On Main Street (Interrupto Music)

Edinburgh singer Gina Rae has proved herself adept in straight jazz idioms, but this album also reflects the pop-inflected side of her work. Sandy Wright’s acoustic guitar accompaniments provide a spare, uncomplicated support for her light, supple voice. She deals well with the resulting exposure, and adds her own double-tracked backing vocals here and there for good measure.

The mood of the album is generally slow and dreamy, with the emphasis firmly on ballads. They open with a trio of songs by Wright before slipping into more familiar repertoire that includes their takes on Leon Russell’s ‘This Masquerade’, Bacharach’s ‘The Look of Love’, Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got a Friend’, several jazz standards and a side-step into country on ‘Tennessee Waltz’.
