Featuring work by Damien Hirst and Bridget Riley, get a tantalising taste of upcoming London auction Made in Britain

The world's largest and most dynamic marketplace for art and luxury, Sotheby's, is known for its great taste. This weekend, those based in or able to travel to the Scottish capital will have an exciting opportunity to check out some of Britain's finest modern art from Friday 20 – Sunday 22 August. The free preview exhibition is opening its doors to the public ahead of Sotheby's flagship London auction Made in Britain, which kicks off on Tuesday 7 September.

Boasting art and objects crafted by the very best artists and makers the UK has to offer, carefully selected by Sotheby's unrivalled experts, the exhibition includes the work of well-known 20th and 21st century figures including Damien Hirst and Bridget Riley. Painting, photography, sculpture, prints and ceramics all feature, and there's plenty to tempt both established and aspiring collectors with pieces at a range of price points.

Amongst the many highlights are a quartet of mid-1960s, plexiglass works from Bridget Riley's 'Fragments' series (Fragment 1, Fragment 3, Fragment 4 and Fragment 6). Riley is a pioneering female artist and these four bold, monochrome pieces are from her most important, profoundly innovative group of prints, created as she initiated the Op Art movement.

Photographer Lorenzo Agius's eye-catching print of Sienna Miller from 2004 finds the actress fully dressed in a bathtub with her hair draped across her face in a mock moustache, capturing her mischievous streak. Other available photography includes iconic images by Terry O'Neill of Brigitte Bardot and Elton John, and a striking, faux candid shot of Kate Moss by legendary fashion and portrait photographer Mario Testino.

Modern-day Renaissance man Cedric Morris – renowned as a teacher, botanist, painter and host – is represented with 1969's Lilies and Poppies Against a Mountain Range, a work never seen at auction before. Along with his partner Lett Haines, Morris created an unorthodox and bohemian artistic hub at his Suffolk home, Benton End, where the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing was based, with notable students including Lucian Freud and Joan Warburton.

John Minton's Propriano, Corsica is a 1949, Cubism-inspired oil painting from the celebrated English artist, which shows the influence of Picasso specifically. Painted following a stay in Corsica with the poet Alan Ross, Minton was escaping the bleakness of post-war Britain, with the exotic, sun-kissed landscapes fuelling his creativity.

A very rare early ceramic by Sara Flynn from 2004 is another pick of the exhibition. This much-admired sculptor studied in Cork and is based in Belfast. Flynn was shortlisted for the inaugural edition of the prestigious Loewe Craft Prize in 2017, while her works are held in international public and private collections, including Chatsworth House and the National Museum of Ireland.

One of Britain's most popular and beloved working artists, Gary Bunt, features with Moonlight. Set at harvest time, it depicts a charming, moon-drenched scene, with a man and his canine best friend looking out over bucolic fields, with the village church beyond. Bunt is known for taking inspiration from the great canons of modern British art history with his delightful depictions of quintessentially British pastimes. The artist is currently flying high after his auction record was broken in March, with one of his works selling for £48,000 against an estimate of £6,000 – 8,000.

The Edinburgh Made In Britain preview takes place from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 August, from 10am – 4pm at The Edinburgh Grand, St Andrew Square. RSVPing is preferred but not essential. To attend, please contact [email protected]
