Proposals invited for public art in Portobello

The ‘Big Things on the Beach’ Public Art Group has announced a call for proposals for three public art works which will be located on the beach front of Portobello.
According to guidelines, submissions shoulf ‘excite, engage and have visual impact’ and ‘encourage the public to look at the promenade area in a new way’.
In 2007, Wonder, by artist Hill Jephson Robb, saw the construction of 3 giant pyramids made from sandbags on Portobello beach.
Although other suggestions are possible, the preferred sites are:
• The square with no name (the seating area near the Figgate burn)
• The concrete bandstand area on the promenade and/or the green spaces behind it (at the bottom of the Marlborough Street)
• The area outside Joppa Toilets
• The waterfront area
The works must be ready to be installed by Thursday 24th July 2008. The budget for the artworks is £900 each.
The project is also looking for a film maker to document the artworks in situ and gather the public’s response to the artworks. The budget for the short film is £300.
