Taste Test - Posh cheese and onion crisps

Tyrells Mature Cheddar & Chives, 50g, 65p (••)
Kember & Jones, 134 Byres Road, Glasgow; Jenners, 48 Princes Street, Edinburgh
The classy looking, see-through packaging looks promising, but these hand-cooked crisps are over fried and over flavoured. The fat content is high and these leave a horribly greasy and soggy taste in the mouth.
Burts Mature Cheddar, Hand Fried Potato Chips, 40g, 65p (•••)
Deli, 11 Skirving Street, Glasgow; Thyme, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh; www.burtschips.com
Burts claim their chips are rustic, crunchy and full of flavour but the taste is more reminiscent of ready salted than mature cheddar. They are nice and crunchy, and have been hand-fried (by Mike – it’s nice to know who fried your crisp). Perfect for those who like their flavours subtle.
Almost Eden Mature Cheddar & Red Onion, 100g, £1.69 (••)
Peckhams, 49 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh; 61-65 Glassford Street, Glasgow; www.peckhams.co.uk
They may claim to be a taste of indulgence without the guilt, but there’s little indulgence here. Baked, not fried, with a melt-in-the-mouth texture, tasting of rice or corn as opposed to potato, these are only worth trying if you’re on a health kick as they are the lowest in fat, by far.
Pret A Manger Croxton Manor Cheddar & Red Onion, 40g, 70p (•••••)
Pret A Manger, 34 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow; 51 Hanover Street, Edinburgh
By far the best of the selection. These crisps look superb and are packed with flavour. Pret insists on chopping and changing the variety of potato they use throughout the year, resulting in an ever-changing crunch and taste. The few extra pennies are certainly worth it.
Kettle Chips Soulmate Cheeses with Onion, 100g, £1.87 (••••)
Available in stores across Scotland
The traditional, well-kent Kettle Chips look and taste great. With a full on cheese flavour and a side order of extra crunchiness these little crisps taste just like cheese baked potatoes in a bag. Very enjoyable and so they should be given the eye-watering price tag. Still, they make for a great snack at any time of the day or night.
Marks & Spencer Red Leicester & Spring Onion, 40g, 59p (•••)
Available in stores across Scotland, www.marksandspencer.com
The originality of the flavour is noticeable at first taste: these are not your average cheese crisps. Made with red leicester and spring onions, these tantalise the taste buds and make a great change from your bog standard cheddar option and at a reasonable price too. Go on, experiment.
