Neon Neon - Stainless Style

ELECTRO

A concept album about John DeLorean (inventor of Marty McFly’s motor and acquitted drug trafficker) by Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys and hip hop innovator Boom Bip sounds like a dream ticket, although the finished product is low on conceptual narrative and high on sleek 80s sheen.

Still, the soundtrack for an imaginary blockbuster is ready and waiting here, from austere Knight Rider-esque theme tune austerity (‘Neon Theme’) to driving Huey Lewis flouro-pop (‘I Told Her on Alderaan’). Fans of each artist won’t be disappointed either: Boom Bip’s rapped ‘Luxury Pool’ (chorus: ‘I’ll make you famous’) is a grindingly contemporary oddity, while Rhys throws himself into the lustrous and self-consciously over-produced retro pop perfection of the endeavour.
