Ashton Lane fire damages historic venues
A number of venues in Glasgow’s Ashton Lane, including bars, restaurants and the recently-restored Grosvenor Cinema, have been closed after a fire ripped through the structure of the lane’s conjoined historic buildings yesterday.
The fire is thought to have started at around noon yesterday (Sunday 24 February) in the kitchen of the Cul De Sac restaurant and spread quickly to the neighbouring cinema, the roof of which sustained particular damage. Both the Cul De Sac and the Grosvenor Cinema are owned by the G1 Group, run by local businessman Stefan King.
The cobbled street just off Byres Road, one of the West End’s top nightlife destinations, was evacuated half an hour after the fire began. Legendary local restaurant The Ubiquitous Chip has reopened today, but the rest of the lane remains closed pending an investigation.
