Sir Jimmy Savile was robbed by a woman in Leeds who made off with his John Lennon-style glasses, an experience he compared to being chased by fans in his heyday.

The 81-year-old said he was in a hotel corridor when the woman grabbed his glasses and made off with them.

He reported the incident to the police, but later said: 'The fact I've not been mugged for over 50 years, I thought it was marvellous, it was just like old times.'

The former DJ said he had been equipped with a spare pair of glasses.

'I've told the police that if the girl turns up and I get my glasses back, I will give her a box of chocolates for giving me a 1950s thrill in 2007.'
