The Rezillos

They’re a joke OK, maybe not now, 30-odd years on, but when the proto-punk-glam-new wave gang from Edinburgh formed as The Rezillos in 1976, it was meant as a bit of a lark. So much so that when their debut single, ‘Can’t Stand My Baby’ started attracting major label attention, half the band quit cos they couldn’t be bothered with the hassle.

They’re ‘Top of the Pops’ heroes In the UK, the band’s most famous song is probably ‘Top of the Pops’, which was a Top 20 hit in 1978. Ironically, it wasn’t until their next single, the less successful ‘Destination Venus’, that the band actually got to appear on Top of the Pops.

‘Somebody’s Going to get their Head Kicked in Tonight’ Well, probably not, but that is the title of the song they’re probably most famous for worldwide. Ironically, it wasn’t even their tune; the band just punked up an old Fleetwood Mac B-side for the 70s.

They’re not to be confused with The Revillos First time round, The Rezillos only existed for four years. Then, for legal reasons, singers Eugene Reynolds and Fay Fife reformed as The Revillos, who continued recording and touring throughout the 80s.

But they’re back for good The classic line-up reformed in 2001 to play their hometown’s Hogmanay celebrations on Princes Street, and this new lease of life has seen them continuing to tour pretty much ever since. Old punks never die, eh? (Doug Johnstone)
