One of the Edinburgh International Festival’s most successful productions is set to make its silver screen debut, with the help of a Glasgow film company.

DollHouse, based on Henrik Ibsen’s classic text, was showcased at this year’s EIF by leading American theatre company Mabou Mines. Directed by innovative, avant-garde director Lee Breuer, the modern adaptation used absurdist elements inspired by such popular tales as Alice in Wonderland. In Breuer’s award-winning production tall women were cast as the belittled female characters, while the patriarchal men of the original piece are played by actors under five feet tall.

New York theatre company Mabou Mines and French TV producers Pour Voir have set their stall at the main studio facilities at Film City Glasgow for a recreation of the theatre performance. The onsite production offices are also being used, while the cast and crew will be staying at the Govan Town Hall-based organisation.

Based in the city’s new Digital Media Quarter at Pacific Quay, this is the first time that Film City has played host to an international production.

Tiernan Kelly, Film City Glasgow Operations Manager, said: ‘This is Film City Glasgow’s first truly international production and an incredibly exciting project for all those involved. New York theatre company Mabou Mines and French TV producers Pour Voir are recognised as key players in the film industry and we are proud they have chosen Film City Glasgow’s world class facilities for the production of DollHouse.’

City councillor George Ryan, executive spokesperson for regeneration, said: ‘The development of Film City Glasgow is part of Glasgow City Council’s long term commitment to the development of the film and TV industry in the city. On completion of the project, Glasgow will have a set of facilities which are unique in the UK, and which position the city particularly well to capture new opportunities which are emerging within the industry.’

The DollHouse production team arrived at Film City Glasgow earlier last month and is expected to complete filming this week.
