Lawrence Leung

How to be as cool as your brother

Lawrence Leung

Australian comedian Lawrence Leung is under the impression that he isn’t cool. Granted, he stands awkwardly on stage, an adorable grin spread across his face and displaying a beard only a maths teacher could sprout; yet there is something undeniably trendy about his Fringe show, Lawrence Leung Learns to Breakdance. He is both a hopeless nerd and a funky innovator as he challenges himself to be as cool as his older brother, Dennis. With a mix of photos, videos and myspace messages, Leung tries to solve each insurmountable task of fashion, girls, attitude and dance.

The laughs are irrepressible as he attempts to sell his own designer T-shirt which reads in ‘chic’ Cantonese lettering, ‘help me, I’m trapped in a sweatshop,’ or tries to pick up women with advice from ‘The Real Man Group’ on ‘optimal mateship strategies’. Some of the stunt comedy makes agonizing viewing as proved by the crowd’s shrieks of disbelief, but Leung carries us through with the sheer force of his cheeky and playful personality. An immensely entertaining and charming show, the hilarious breakdancing finale will have every audience member cheering for Lawrence Leung, the coolest geek in town. (Emma Lennox)
