Ably accompanied by musician Nick Pynn, this year’s Boothby show is the product of a seasoned performer relaxed in his work. There’s an air of insouciance even when things go slightly wrong; which they do quite frequently and are immediately shrugged off with a knowing laugh and a pull of his amiable clowning face. They begin with a simultaneously funny and poignant song where Graffoe sings hello in a handful of different languages whilst the VDU projects an associated image, often political. With the song, Graffoe sets out his stall: the humour will be often gentle, sometimes surreal but he will remain unafraid to make a point when he wants to.

The mood continues with the kind of deceptive whimsy we’ve come to expect from Mr Graffoe. His songs and interspersed gags touch on topics as disparate as stalking a budgie-hating woman to gags about the asteroid heading for earth in several years time. To top off the hour, the accompanying music would be perfectly pleasant to listen to in its own right yet here it’s just a bonus. It’s a pleasure to watch an artiste so comfortable in his work.
