When Pratibha Parmar, the multi-award winning filmmaker, went to the UK Film Council for funding for Nina’s Heavenly Delights, her debut mainstream lesbian feature, she was told either the lesbian stuff goes or the money does.

Considering that Gurinder Chadha optioned to axe the lesbian storyline in Bend It Like Beckham, Parmar decided to keep her script and her integrity and go it alone. Taking seven years to complete, this semi-autobiographical story, co-written by Andrea Dear Frankie Gibb, is set in a contemporary, magical Glasgow. Nina (Shelley Conn), a Scottish Asian cutie, returns home as the family black sheep to run her deceased father’s Indian restaurant and encounters familiar themes of cultural clashes, family obligation and forbidden love. Happy endings abound, as Nina gets the girl, her Dad’s business and her identity. Given Parmar’s more radical filmmaking past, this is stuff of pink fluffy clouds and one more for the queer teenage market. Ah, to be sweet 16!
