The godfathers of synth-driven pop music will hit stages in London, Aberdeen, Liverpool and Leeds next summer, with a show that sees them play all the hits (and plenty of deep cuts) from their near-flawless back catalogue.
We’ve praised Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s unique brand of immaculate pop several times in the past. We said of their 14th studio album Hotspot, ‘Inevitability never sounds as fresh as it does upon the arrival of a new Pet Shop Boys album. The sound of a format being rinsed – which is undoubtedly what's happening each time – is drowned out by the inescapable delights of those big, bright, otherworldly washes of synthesiser and callbacks to the dancefloors of the late 80s and early 90s. Back then, the collision of Chris Lowe's house-driven beats and Neil Tennant's arch, lyrical constructions was a subtly revolutionary sound, a celebration of and reaction to the mainstreaming of club music in popular culture at the time of its emergence.’ Read the full review here.
More recently, the Boys cropped up on single ‘Purple Zone’, a collaboration with fellow synth-fanciers Soft Cell. Listen to the song below.
