Top Underbelly shows to see at the Fringe

The Fringe is back, and with it comes Underbelly’s teeming programme of comedy, cabaret and drama. To help you find a show that’ll suit you, we’ve rounded up a few of our highlights from Underbelly venues. Read on and delve into a world of Cuban street parties, circus spectaculars, mythical quests and more.

Dragons & Mythical Beasts
The Olivier-nominated Dragons & Mythical Beasts is calling brave heroes of all ages to meet a menagerie of mythical creatures, from stone trolls to cute unicorns. Ideal if your child’s just discovered Tolkien or loves bingeing on Breath Of The Wild.
Underbelly Bristo Square, 4-21 August 2022, 11.20am.
Created by five-time Fringe First-winning director Toby Gough, Havana Street Party fuses modern dance with a Cuban flavour. The Los Datway street dance, Mas Con Menos percussion and Kufesa contemporary ballet will be joined by a 10-piece live band led by rapper Bad Boy Ovio and DJ Ernesto.

The internationally acclaimed La Clique had its first run at the Fringe in 2004. It’s returning to its spiritual home this year after a spate of performances in London and Singapore, ready to bring audiences the best in circus, comedy and cabaret. Eclecticism lies at the heart of La Clique, so expect plenty of sauciness, humour and thrills from nu-cabarets' leading lights.
Underbelly Circus Hub On The Meadows, 5-27 August, 7.35pm.
The Untapped series features four early-to-mid career companies that have made outstanding shows and received funding from Underbelly, New Diorama Theatre and Methuen Drama to showcase their work at the Fringe. Featured in the programme is Good Grief, a physical comedy about processing the death of a loved one, This Is Not A Show About Hong Kong, a dance theatre spectacle focusing on human rights, Caligari, a stylish adaptation of silent film classic The Cabinet Of Dr Caligari, and Blanket Ban, a multi-disciplinary discussion on Malta’s blanket ban of abortions.

Unfortunate: The Untold Story Of Ursula The Sea Witch
Unfortunate: The Untold Story Of Ursula The Sea Witch
From the multi-award-winning Fat Rascal Theatre comes this cheeky, high-camp parody musical of everyone’s favourite underwater villain. Unfortunate: The Untold Story Of Ursula The Sea Witch gives audiences the chance to hear from Ursula, the diva-ish dame from The Little Mermaid, as she regales them with stories and RuPaul-beating sass.
Underbelly George Square,3–28 August, 5.55pm.
Cirk La Putyka and Kyiv Municipal Academy of Variety and Circus Art collaborate on this physical theatre show about family, freedom and borders. Incorporating elements of circus and dance, Boom finds two performers, who met mere days after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, showcase their talents to emphasise resilience in the face of adversity.

Rhys Nicholson: Rhys! Rhys! Rhys!
Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson has been making international waves as a host of RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under. He’ll be showcasing more of his acerbic style in a show which aims to avoid the heavy topics that have dominated the news cycle over the past few years in favour of old-fashioned and wholly uncomplicated joy.
