Jazz Emu: You Shouldn’t Have ★★★★★

Spoiler alert: created by Archie Henderson, Jazz Emu is a multimedia pseudo-cult-of-personality. You can find him on several digital platforms, but you’re way better off seeing him live for his fantastically hilarious and wholly original You Shouldn’t Have. Teleported from the 70s, but with a passing grab at Daft Punk, this serious artiste discusses only the most profound subjects. Such as his love of crispy towels.

Mr Emu is a real musical talent so while specialising in electrofunk and techno-pop styles, he even throws an unaccompanied Puccini aria into the meld. These performances are motivated by an obsessive egotism and desire to win back his fans, after the ignominy that befell Emu when he offended the Goblin community at a huge concert in Helsinki.
The onslaught of wit and foolery is relentlessly brilliant, executed with musical and physical panache. Emu manifests extraordinary cultural attunement and absurd attention to detail, as he sings about microwave dials and navigates a digital world that involves next-level CAPTCHA tests and Twitter attacks. When he eventually gives up trying to prove himself a good person, lyrics such as ‘engage in capitalism even more than I currently do’ are surprisingly catchy. So funky, so funny.
